A Mazda BT-50, equipped with an automatic transmission, was brought into the Automotive Obsession workshop due to the driver reporting an unusual noise emanating from the transmission when the vehicle was in drive. The issue was causing the driver concern due to the potential for serious mechanical failure. Initial Inspection: The team at Automotive Obsession commenced diagnostic procedures by first conducting a thorough visual and auditory inspection while the vehicle was in operation to confirm the complaint. The noise was indeed apparent when the vehicle was placed in drive, suggesting an internal issue within the transmission. Diagnostic Process: To delve deeper into the problem, a comprehensive inspection of the transmission fluid was carried out. Transmission fluid is vital for the operation of automatic transmissions, providing the necessary hydraulic pressure and lubrication for moving components. The condition of the fluid can often indicate the health of the transmission. Upon examination, the transmission fluid was found to be black in colour, a clear indication of contamination and degradation. This was a significant red flag, as healthy transmission fluid typically has a red or pink hue and is translucent. The next step involved removing the transmission pan, a component that holds the transmission fluid. This procedure is often done to inspect for any physical evidence of internal damage. It was during this phase of the investigation that metal particles were discovered within the pan. The presence of metal shavings or particles in the transmission fluid is a serious concern, as it points to abnormal wear and tear of the transmission’s internal components. Conclusion and Resolution: The findings of black transmission fluid combined with the discovery of metal in the pan led to the diagnosis of significant internal transmission damage. The most likely cause of such damage could be due to various factors including, but not limited to, overheating, inadequate maintenance (leading to degraded fluid), or mechanical failure of internal components such as bearings or gears. Given the extent of the damage, the recommended course of action was to proceed with a transmission rebuild or replacement. A transmission rebuild involves disassembling the transmission to replace worn out or damaged parts, while a replacement involves swapping the existing transmission for a new or refurbished one. The vehicle owner was presented with both options, including detailed breakdowns of the cost and benefits of each. After careful consideration, the owner opted for a transmission rebuild, prioritizing the repair of the existing transmission to ensure compatibility and cost-effectiveness. Outcome: The Automotive Obsession team successfully carried out the transmission rebuild, replacing all damaged components and ensuring the system was restored to its optimal function. The vehicle was tested rigorously post-repair to confirm that the transmission noise was eliminated and that the transmission was operating smoothly in all gears. The Mazda BT-50 was returned to the customer, who was pleased with the resolution and the restoration of their vehicle's performance and reliability. This case study highlights the importance of regular maintenance checks, including the condition of transmission fluid, to prevent such severe issues.
